KARSTIC ACTIONS/WORKS: DOCUMENTATION

From June 4th — July 15, 2021 Galerie Simoncini —Luxembourg, presented the second extensive installment of Nicole Peyrafitte & Pierre Joris’ Domopoetics creations. The couple, who has shared life for three decades, moved in with their most recent KARSTIC ACTIONS/WORKS —paintings, texts, videos — & occupied the three levels of the gallery.
— On the ground floor, the Karstic Refuge where their domestic & political processes interconnect & transform.
— In the basement, the Sanctuary, neither holy nor secret, but table/altar for their intimate domopoetic works.
— On the second floor, the Canopy, where the diversity & resilience of multi-species relations can be experienced.
For the opening & the finissage live Karstic-Action performances were presented. Below are the two videos:

OPENING:  Friday, June 4th at 6:00PM with an improvisation of Pascal Delalée on violin

Opening Weekend at la Galerie Simoncini au Luxembourg

Opening Weekend at la Galerie Simoncini au Luxembourg

Video capture Paige Mitchell

Amazing week (preparing, setting up, installing) and uplifting weekend (painting, reading, performing) at the Simoncini Gallery in Luxembourg. We had a three-day opening party during which we nomadically performed our collaborations moving across the three floors of the exhibition.

At the lower level we have installed a complete set of Pierre Joris’ publications — about 60 books & chapbooks moving between poetry, essays & translations. The earliest publications date from 1969; in 1990 begins the years of our collaborations: it includes art work I created for Pierre’s books & videos (12 are available at the galerie) on Pierre’s life & work.
The readings at that level thus focused on our Domopoetics world. The readings on the 1st floor (or 2nd floor in the US!) focused on my recent books & carnets as exhibited there. The performance on the ground level was dedicated to live Action Paintings — I made 5 this weekend! — with Pierre reading from The Book Of U, his new book of poems published by Editions Simoncini with my translation and illustrations for the limited edition.

On Friday Man’ok performed on bass with us. On Saturday & Sunday Pierre DJ’d sound files by earlier collaborators Holland Hopson & Michael Bisio.

So far this has been a truly superb experience for us and, we hope, for the many visitors, from old friends to the people who came in because they saw the action in progress from the street.

The show will run until November 26 and a few more Actions will occur.

With many thanks to André Simoncini & Ingrid Anders and their incredible team of collaborators who made it possible.

Here is the first batch of documentation organized by sections:

Fast Poulet

Fast Poulet

Hilh de puto or OMG! I had so much fun with this project. Truly a spontaneous affair. We had been so wrapped up in our respective working spaces that when dinner time came around Pierre & I realized that neither of us had roasted the chicken. He started by serving the aperitif and plugged WBGO via his iPhone into the stereo system. In a way I was happy we hadn’t roasted it because I wanted to film the cutting up of a chicken as I wanted to post it on the blog. While I set up the camera the radio played a piece that really caught my ear. I couldn’t place it in time; the pianist was so free and at the same time the arrangement was traditional. I got so excited, & high listening to this music — & no! I was not drunk, I just had one sip of my glass of wine!

It was “Luyah! The Glorious Step” the first track of  Cecil Taylor Quartet’s CD Looking Ahead recorded in 1958. Besides the maestro himself, the personnel includes Earl Griffith on vibraharp, Buell Neidlinger on bass, and Dennis Charles on drums. Well, I went on line and ordered it immediately, I had to have it.  The 1958 liner notes are by Nat Hentoff and conclude by saying:

Cecil hasn’t worked out all his style yet, but what he has already done is important and makes him, in one sense, ‘in the avant garde of everybody,’  as Martin Williams puts it. Most important is his emotional message. Much of the musical history of the Negro in America is in his work, but not as an anthology. He’s a new user of that basic language with his own additions to make.

Yeah! Emotional message for sure. I could feel it through my entire body.  Also, for me this recording sheds a light on how the “avant garde” music I love so much happened.  Never had I  heard such an absolutely clear articulation of both ideas and form — and all the while I was  cutting up my chicken!  A metonymic epiphany of our “domopoetics” that feeds on explosive & uninhibited  energies. And to counter-stretch  with a metaphor (you must see the video to get that one) it is unequivocal to me that Cecil Taylor knows about finding the joint & firmly cutting down through it!
