My “origin” lies, here (written June 2016) in Luchon — where I was born in 1960 and where I lived until 1982. I have been in the US since 1987. First in San Diego and now in Brooklyn. My work as a pluridisciplinary artist leads to much travel, and thus to very varied works: performances, drawings, paintings, texts, voice work, film & video, cooking… I am not attached to one specific form or genre, I use what I need.
Mon “origine” se trouve ici (écrit en juin 2016), à Luchon, —j’y suis née en 1960 et y ai vécu jusqu’en 1982. Je suis aux USA depuis 1987. D’abord à San-Diego et maintenant à Brooklyn. Mon travail d’artiste pluridisciplinaire me conduit à voyager, d’où des travaux très variés: performances, dessins, peintures, textes, travail de la voix, films, cuisine .… Je ne suis pas attachée à une forme particulière, j’utilise ce dont j’ai besoin.

*OrgaGinal* is the portmanteau word which defines my in/quest to communicate with the ancestral female unconscious, but also with everything that permits heuristic discovery. That is to say, the art to search for what one finds; thus this mantra that has been following me for quite some time and that is also the title of my next film: “Things fall where they lie.”
*OrgaGinal* est mon mot valise qui définit mon en/quête pour communiquer avec l’inconscient féminin ancestral, mais aussi avec tout ce qui permet une découverte heuristique. C’est-à-dire l’art de chercher ce qu’on trouve; d’où le mantra qui me suit depuis longtemps et qui est le titre de mon prochain film: “Les choses tombent où elle reposent.”

For the third installment of Cabaret Hérétique, Nicole Peyrafitte’s will share the stage with Michael Bisio (bass) & Connie Crothers (piano) for a voco-musico-poetico-visual-comestible improv performance. The focus will be on sentience as the core concept of their improvisational motive traveling across continents & languages.

Come enjoy Nicole Peyrafitte’s nourishing, sensual, campy and scintillating multi-layered vocal range, texts & visuals, Michael Bisio’s extraordinary tonal beauty and the intensity of the very personal musical language of his double bass, & Connie Crothers’ magical and brilliant piano promising spontaneous composition balancing traditional patterns and free improvisation in a mysterious & magical way!

Nicole Peyrafitte was born & raised in the French Pyrenees. Her texts, voice-work, paintings, videos, & cooking are showcased in a range of multi-lingual & multi-faceted performances, recordings & publications. Her work is informed & characterized by an artistic quest between two continents & four languages. She performs nationally & internationally, & lives in Brooklyn with her husband, poet Pierre Joris.
Recent works: CD: Whisk Don’t Churn (2006) with Michael Bisio. Latest book/CD is Bi-Valve : Vulvic Space/Vulvic Knowledge, 17 paintings, 17 multilingual texts, 1 recipe & 1 CD (Stockport Flats, 2013). She is presently co-editing (with Pierre Joris) Talvera, an Anthology of Occitan Literature from the Dawn of the Troubadours to Tomorrow (forthcoming 2016). Also forthcoming is LandscOpe, a selection of recent texts & photographs (éditions Plaine Page France).

Michael Bisio, bassist/composer, has eighty-five recordings in his discography, twenty -four of these are split evenly between leader/co-leader, ten of them document his extraordinary association with modern piano icon Matthew Shipp. Michael has been called a poet, a wonder and one of the most virtuosic and imaginative performers on the double bass. Nate Chinen in the New York Times writes :
“The physicality of Mr. Bisio’s bass playing puts him in touch with numerous predecessors in the avant-garde, but his expressive touch is distinctive;…”
As a composer Michael has been awarded nine grants and an Artist Trust Fellowship.

Connie Crothers, pianist, has lived her musical life as performer, recording artist and teacher releasing the feeling—her source—into the music which realizes her range of expression, her virtuosity based in her love of the instrument and her desire to discover everything she can hear and imagine through spontaneous improvisation.
Connie was selected for a week residency at The Stone, from August 19 to 24 2014. She performed twelve sets, each set with a different lineup of musicians. “Concert in Paris,” a solo CD of selections from a solo concert performed in Paris, was released on the New Artists label in August. Earlier in this year, her quartet, with Richard Tabnik on alto saxophone, Ken Filiano on bass, Roger Mancuso on drums, released “Deep Friendship,” New Artists, their concert at William Paterson University. CD release in a performance at Roulette in Brooklyn. She often appears at the Vision Festival.Feature articles have appeared in Jazz Inside, Knack (Belgium), Jazz Podium (Germany), Cadence, The Village Voice, All About Jazz New York.
Connie Crothers studied with and taught in association with Lennie Tristano. He wrote, for her first record, “Perception”:
“Connie Crothers is the most original musician it has ever been my privilege to work with.”
Connie was a guest on Marian McPartland’s radio show “Piano Jazz.” She was honored by the Jazz Museum in Harlem by being featured in their series “Harlem Speaks.”
In the centennial issue of Cadence, she was selected for the list of the most important and influential musicians in the last twenty-five years of the 20th century.

Here are some videos of our gig on Saturday September 15th. I had a magnificent time diving whole-heartedly into impro-land with master double bassists Michael Bisio & Ken Filiano. They had set high standards with a very inspiring first set. After the break  we did three pieces with my visuals:

DRAGON LAND BAKERY & RIDE THE LINE / CHEVAUCHER LE TRAIT —both featured on my CD:  “La Garbure Transcontinentale / The Bi-continental Chowder  —  for which Firehouse artistic director Sandra Sprecher joined in & added relevance on piano.  RIDE THE LINE / CHEVAUCHER LE TRAIT just came out in an anthology edited by Erika Lutzner: Some Stories Are True That Never HappenedYou will get a chance to set it live again at the book party on January 5th  at Modca 103 N 3rd street, Brooklyn.

We closed with PINKONOCLASTIC, a piece that literally whisks to emulsion: icons, politics & La Vie en Rose. To help us reflect on these complicated issues, we had the great honor to have the magnificent Grande Dame piano improvisor Connie Crothers  joining us. Then we hung out most pleasurably eating the mean black bean chili, the corn bread, the pescajos & the stage -vanilla flavored- whipped cream (see video 3). Truly “thank you” for playing, for being there — & also thank you Pierre Joris for filming & Françoise Bevy for the still photos!
